The Modern Art Museum of the City of Paris has now "released Stones ... , "A retrospective of the work of American artist of Cherokee origin, Jimmie Durham. Established since 1994 in Europe, this major player in contemporary art, yet little known, has long championed the Indian cause while denouncing imperialism and segregation. His work is marked by her quest for identity and his unconventional mind. By diverting its own identity in the photographic series Self-portrait, the artist reinvents history.
It permeates his work a total refusal to belong to any system, whether governmental or aesthetics. Nature plays an important role in the work of Jimmie Durham. She is both witness and victim of a society self-defeating. We thus find slices of tree trunks marked by rifle bullets during WW2 or a marble slab bleeding wounded heart. This character bears the scars of a world it seems disrespectful with a gentleness and brutality shifted. The artist uses regularly in his work the stone, symbol and metaphor of the architecture of the controversy as a tool of destruction. Nature seems to take revenge by pods fridge repeatedly in St. Fridge or crushing a tourist plane in peace again before settling down to make way for a concert in the video Grunewald forest.
